Change The World Wednesday (CTWW) Challenge and Trend Energy Saving

This week Change The World Wednesday (CTWW) challenge is put your computer to sleep or set it to hibernate when it's not in use. Or, typically, if you're already doing the first part of the challenge, I ask you to write about it on your blog. This week, however, we're going to do something different. If you are already in the habit of putting your computer to sleep or turning it off when you're not using it, look around your home and identify one other "sneaky" area that uses electricity.

The CCTW challenge has been flashing back me to CeBIT 2009, the largest exhibition of information and telecommunication in Hanover. The main theme of CeBIT 2009 this year is Green IT. It was not much to do with environmental protection, but more on the new concept of energy savings, especially in the computer sector and peripheral device. CeBIT has now established itself as the world's leading trade fair for Green IT.

BITKOM President, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. August-Wilhelm Scheer, speech in CeBIT 2009 Greeting:

"....The demand for such a broad display of our industry sector has risen in the last months: Green IT offers an outstanding possibility for cutting costs, especially in times of economic downturn. However, it is not solely about saving money. Climate change can be contained using innovative ICT technologies…"

The device consists of a computer CPU, monitor, printer device and sound system quietly into the cost factor does not feel by us. If the costs created by the use of computers, it is a logical consequence. However, it costs arise when the computer is not used. Even in stand-by condition, when we break and the computer is still in a state of burning.

The facts of energy saving, we could consider to hibernate our computer, are:

1. When we turn on the computer at least 200 watts of electricity consumed for the CPU, monitors, printers and other devices.

2. A research about searching with Google Search Engine was concluded that electricity consumed for searching is around 11 watts per hour.

3. In Windows operating systems XP and Vista have this feature-energy option that allows the processor to operate at energy saving mode. The hibernation steps are referred by Small Footprints, in the CCTW challenge post, i.e. : Use Standby and Hibernate and Manually Put Your Computer Into Hibernation.

4. Turn off the computer does not mean cut off electrical current, as long as the cable was not removed from the ignition. There remains sucking standby power average of 6 watts. You could buy a combination plug that has a switch to decide the electric current in the network of electric current.

I wrote an article of home electricity saving, in bahasa Indonesia, : Tips #3- Gaya Hidup Selaras Alam: 3 Prinsip Hemat Energi Listrik di Rumah, then, already read some blog's post about home energy saving. It keep me thought that this behavior will likely soon change.

In the future, we will be more concerned, because electricity rates will be taken into account more expensive. Every cent of money that can be saved means quite a lot in a situation of recession and continuing increases in energy prices.

Actually, I am already in the habit of putting my computer to sleep or turning it off when I’m not using it. Here is the other area of energy saving around our “tropical” house by design:

First, multiply ventilation to utilize sunlight as a light in the daytime. However, ventilation should be made for lighting facing north or south, so do not get direct sun which could damage the furniture. In addition to ventilating the room should not need such intensive lighting, but a living room or bathroom.

Second, reduce the screen or wall that is not necessary. Use a multi-function room so that lighting can be saved.

Third, use automated lights. Automatic lights will immediately turn off according to the time of using has been determined by me.

Finally, use a mirror to reflect light, so it can be used by more space.

EDITED: Here is Small Footprints's CCTW Challenge

Now, for this week's challenge:

This week's challenge comes from one of our new bloggy friends, Millenniumhealth, at ... well ... Millenniumhealth. It's an easy activity and once again shows us that small actions matter ... especially when we all do them. Here it is:

This week, put your computer to sleep or set it to hibernate when it's not in use. If you need help in doing this, check out these sites:

Use Standby and Hibernate
Manually Put Your Computer Into Hibernation

Or ...

Typically, if you're already doing the first part of the challenge, I ask you to write about it on your blog. This week, however, we're going to do something different. If you are already in the habit of putting your computer to sleep or turning it off when you're not using it, look around your home and identify one other "sneaky" area that uses electricity. Come back here and, in the comments section, tell us what it is and how you'll either eliminate it or reduce it.

I started this last night by shutting completely down for the night. I would like to see a change in my energy bill to reflect the environmental love I am sending out!
